A Year in Red! Lipstick swatches XOXO

Crimson pout heaven! Sneak peak into what's in my make up bag's lipstick compartment after a year of binge collecting. And my first funny attempt at swatching ;P

I started my (mostly matte red) lipstick addiction about a year ago, but somehow it feels like I have known my red lippies since... forever?
Oh crumbs, I must confess that I simply cannot live without them. The right red gives a woman her edge, transforming her completely, empowering her... Girl-next-door to femme fatale, all it takes is a simple swipe of red. Think of Dita Von Teese and her immaculate crimson pout (she must be beaming in approval now).
Oh girls, stop shying away from your reds. Nonsense, sweetheart! There is nothing called too bold a colour! Every woman, regardless of skin tone, has a red that suits her perfectly to the ground.

Enough of the introductory formalities, I know what you are here for. Swatches!

Over the past 13 months or so I have been procuring rouge, rouge and more rouge, so much so that people always ask to see what reds I have. That got me thinking, why not swatch them for starters? That, plus the fact that I have always found online lipstick swatches useful (95% of my lipstick purchases have been induced by swatches found online), translated into me trying in earnest to find all my lost and wandering lipsticks and dip my toes in swatching waters.

For your information, I am a MAC NC 35, so most of the time I tend to go after warmer toned reds. I also have a thing for mattes and darker lipstick, hence if you are a pink/nude or gloss lover, I apologize for not being able to have something for you. If you are a fellow crimson addict like I am, then just keep reading ;P

The photos below are grouped into 3 different sets for your viewing pleasure:

Notes for Set 3:
Sorry for placing Sepentina here, I know it looks a little out of place! Oh, and it is a dark metallic green which did not show too well in the first photo. Thank goodness it turned out okay in the Indoor Yellowish Lighting shot!

As for Fyrinnae, it is a coppery shade, very very metallic. Couldnt photograph the damn thing well! A bit glossy, but like any color in this set (apart from Serpentina), it can be blotted out by kissing on some tissue paper.

Kat Von D's Everlasting Love Liquid Lipstick and Stila 's Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick are the most pigmented matte lip products I have so far. I swear they are beyond gorgeous!!!!

As for Lip Ink, it is personally recommended by Dita Von Teese when I asked her about kissproof lipsticks through her twitter. She responded, " Lip Ink goes beyond kiss-proof. It's sex-proof." If you're wondering about the validity of her claim, I can now personally endorse that too! Apart from Lip Ink, MAC's Pro Longwear Lustre Lipcolour (also swatched in this set) is also as smoochproof. The difference? While they are both kissproof, they are definitely two very different products. MAC's texture is much heavier and creamier compared to Lip Ink's watery inkish one. Heavier and creamier or lighter and runnier, it depends on your preference really. Both are great. Apparent downsides? Hmmm... MAC's dried out my lips pretty badly (LipInk did too,  to a lesser degree), but this happens to me with any extreme longwear lip product I have tried, so go through the whole balm routine 30 minutes prior to lessen the damage. As for Lip Ink, similar to any lipstick sealers on the market, it has that pungent smell initially and if you are new to this, it will sting a bit due to its alchohol content. Don't worry, subsequent applications will not tingle so much. WARNING: make sure you do NOT put it on cracked lips or the wounds will sting/burn like crazy!
Why go through so much agony because of a lip product? Because Lip Ink has the widest color range of semi-permanent lip products, and hell yes, as Dita said, all sexproof.

That was a long post... My first attempt at swatching, hope you enjoyed reading it as much as I did in doing this!

XOXO

Monica

P.S. And here's me being completely random and pulling funny faces ;P

Crimson Lips & Dainty Red Pouts

Been saving this blog post for a collaboration blog with fellow make up addict Keely Kuk, but since it's  taking some time, I'll just publish it here first.

I have a fetish that borders on the insane- Lipsticks.
To be more precise, I have this unyielding lust for dark red, highly pigmented, matte lipsticks. There is something about the color deep ruby red that emanates decadence, sensuality, as well as a nostalgic whiff of old Hollywood glamour.
I might be a beginner to the world of makeup, but this intense craving for lip lacquers is definitely a natural extension of who I am.
One day when I am lain, I would have my Nars Pure Matte Lipstick in Mascate go into the dark with me. I simply refuse to go without it- it is unthinkable to see any man part with a piece of his soul.
(Me in my Nars Pure Matte Lipstick in Mascate, sorry for the blurriness...)

What is so good about Nars Pure Matte Lipsticks then?
Anyone who is acquainted with matte lipsticks would know that this special genre of lip products has the most undesirable trait of drying up one’s lips (making it feel and look prune-like).
Nars Pure Matte Lipsticks on the other hand, have the most moisturizing formula ever, thanks to the inclusion of wild mango butter. Upon using this God-sent wonder, I never again felt like my mouth was morphing into some kind of prune-like hybrid. Goodbye raisin pouts!

Apart from its “least drying” virtue, it is also an angel to apply. Some other brands come up with matte lipsticks that are so dry, people find it a pain to put on. You know, all the tugging and pulling at the lips. I never had this problem with my Nars Pure Matte Lipstick, for its velvety texture translates into sheer gliding-on pleasure. Not to mention, it is so very pigmented and opaque in color- unleash your inner femme fatale with just one swipe!

As with many matte lipsticks I have, Nars pure matte lipsticks are very longwearing. I can eat all the greasy burgers I care to have, drink my way through my every day dosage of full fat coke, yet never worry about it looking horrid. Longwearing (lasts more than 6 hours on me), it also never feathers, bleeds or stains. A true Objet d’art!

Moving on to the issue of color, I am an Asian with sun-kissed skin, so I belong to the sect of “warm-toned reds”. To make things more complicated, I am very particular about my scarlets, only going after dark reds that are neutral (neither warm or cool), or brown-based. Nars Pure Matte Lipstick in Mascate falls into the former category  (a neutral- toned true red) and is a decadent looking, glamorous deep red.  It is beyond a doubt, my classic rouge, which goes with anything I wear.

What made me buy my Nars Pure Matte Lipstick in Mascate in the first place? I was looking for matte reds that would work on people with colored skin (No, I am not a racist!!!). Then I came across this photo. It was then that I knew I just had to buy whatever the model was wearing on her ethereally perfect pout.

A slight drawback though, as with many other Nars products, its Pure Matte Lipsticks are quite pricey, this time perhaps even more so, given the miniscule quantity ($25 for 0.07 oz). However, it's certainly worth your money- I'm definitely getting another when this tube is done.

Color Me Black; Color Me Crimson

I only see in shades of black, grey and occassionally, white.
Every now and then, crimson slashes its way into my vision, leaving stains of passionate ruby in its wake.
So, color me black; color me crimson.
It's the way I live, the way I love, the way I die, and the way I am reborn
It's the only way I know how - a never ending cycle

Perish- Stuff that Fantasies are Made of

Extreme fetish performer and model, Perish is like ambrosia on my tongue- the ultimate gothic fantasy. From his extreme performances (which aparently includes a huge prop penis that "shoots its load" on some lucky female performer) to his stunning photoshoots, Perish is the ultimate chameleon, merging taboo, gender bending, sex, music, fashion and art into one big artistic kaleidoscope- sort of like the Big Bang, but even better.
Having stumbled upon him years ago, I am still as mesmerized today as I was the first time around.

Visit the master/muse himself here: http://www.myspace.com/Perishable
Yes, there are videos there too ;P Enjoy!
Warning: not for the faint hearted

the ultimate understated luxury- crocodile leather jacket

I love leather jackets and what can be more luxurious than crocodile skin? Yes, we all love crocodile birkin bags (with diamond hardware), but sometimes its nice to go for a tasteful understated masterpiece. Here is where the crocodile skin jacket/ trench coat/peacoat/ bomber jacket comes in.

I'd certainly want mine in matte black, not the shiny look-at-me variety. Matched with kid leather gloves and a sultry look, you're as ready as you'll ever be.
